Riding With Her Dogs

Joanna Small of Klamath, CA has long suffered from multiple sclerosis. A few months ago she and her doctor agreed that she would benefit from using a power wheelchair. However, Joanna had an extremely difficult time finding a company to work with her insurance. By the time she found Open-Aire in the phone book she was not very hopeful. Joanna says, “I was skeptical since lots of other companies told me they’d be able to help me, but couldn’t. They told me confusing things and I wasn’t sure if my insurance would qualify or not.”

After spending time on the phone with Joanna’s insurance providers, Open-Aire Mobility Division case managers confirmed that she was in fact covered for power mobility equipment. They handled her paperwork and worked with her doctor to get everything completed. A few weeks later Joanna finally got the new power wheelchair that she needed.

Now Joanna is very happy and doing her best to get the word out about Open-Aire Mobility Division. “I’ve told the MS Foundation, the MS Society of San Francisco and I’m ready to tell some more people,” she says. The only ones happier about her new power wheelchair are her dogs who love to ride with her. “When I beep the horn they come running and jump up into my lap. They’re even trying to drive, but right now they just push the joystick and make us do donuts in the living room.” Is driver's ed in the future for Joanna’s dogs?   1. I would not recommend this company for your Mobility needs. Now the doctor who referred us to MRB-Open Aire will no longer recommend her patients to them either. After 6 weeks of phone calls unanswered, messages never returned, and the doctor providing multiple faxed prescriptions and the 6-page required paperwork, we continue to be told that MRB cannot find the paperwork, and the last response was the doctor never stated that a motor chair was needed. The doctors report stated the need in 6 places on the document. It does not appear that MRB want to do business, and is very unprofessional with their follow-up, or serving their customers. There are other authorized DME Medicare distributors available. Do not waste your time with this company.

  3. Just as every toddler needs to learn how to use the toilet, all dogs must learn that it is unacceptable to go to the bathroom indoors. This can be a tricky process and requires extreme patience. Dogs respond more to positive reinforcement over negative punishment. Screaming and yelling at a puppy after he's made an accident won't do any good. In fact, they don't understand or feel guilt for the accident they've made. Take your puppy out multiple times a day and reward them greatly when they choose to go to the bathroom in the grass.   5. Regardless of how much you love having your dog around and how much you enjoy their company, the back seat is always the safest location for them. There is far less chance that your dog will trip over the brake and gas pedals or interfere with your ability to properly drive when they are in the rear seat. Keeping your dog in the front seat may also obstruct your field of vision and make you less attentive to the road. Your canine companion will have more room to move about or stretch in the rear seat than in the front, which improves the likelihood that they will get comfortable for longer journeys.
